Grocery Store Bedding

When I think about buying new sheets I don't usually think of looking at the grocery store.  Who does?  So imagine my surprise when I walked into the grocery store last night and found a cart inside the door full of clearance housewares.  It's been several years since I bought new sheets, they tend to be quite pricey for anything over 250 thread count and I refuse to spend money on cheap, scratchy sheets.

I prefer cotton, but these are 400 thread count and have a lovely feel to them, buttery soft.  I was more than happy to grab the two remaining queen sets.  No choice in colors, but it's not like I display my sheets on the front lawn or anything;)

Each set comes with 4 pillowcases rather than the normal 2.  From now on I'll have to pay more attention to the non-food isle when shopping for groceries.  Who knows what else I might find.

What odd bargains does your grocery store surprise you with?
Thanks for stopping!

Another Good Score

I've been a bit under the weather all this week and it's made me cranky.  I was determined to get out and go to some yard sales this morning no matter how I felt.  Hunting for bargains always makes me feel better.

There were only a handful of sales posted and of course it was snowing as we left, so I didn't have high expectations.  It is April in North Dakota, so this is not surprising.  Lucky for me they toughed it out and opened as planned:)  Gotta love the people up here, they are quite hardy and stubborn.

The first sale we stopped at was a good one, great prices and super friendly people.  I found a few linens and these great vintage calenders.  They had several different years, but not 1973, my birth year.  Oh well, still cool:)  My husband also found several books on tape for just .25 each.  In fact, I think everything we bought there was just .25 each.  Love those kind of sales!

Then we had several dud sales that had nothing good and were for the most part, overpriced.  We did find one more decent sale where we found the fun southwest glasses for just .50 for all.  After that we hit up a couple thrift stores where I found the emerald dessert plates and dug through the silverware bins and pulled out some silver plate and vintage stainless.

This covered casserole was a fun find.  I was hoping it was something special, but it turns out to be somewhat common.  Made in the 40's but going pretty cheap on E-bay.  I like it though and I only gave $5 for it.

Now for my find of the day.
This Villeroy & Boch tureen in the French Garden, Fleurence pattern.  It is in perfect condition, doesn't look used at all.  French garden is a current pattern and this tureen can be bought at Macy's for $451 or if you shop around there are several online retailers advertising it for around $225.  I paid $7.  I feel a lot better;)

Weekend Bargains

I didn't actually find anything over the weekend since it was Easter weekend, but I did head out on Monday and found a few things.  Most of the shops are picked over right now and I'm not seeing much, plus I'm noticing a lot higher prices and many items are now above my limit.  One store is even switching tags on sale days:(  I'm tempted to take pictures before and after and confront them.  I waited weeks for an item with a white tag to go on sale, went in to find that item gone and figured it sold, oh well.  I went back a day later and it was back on the shelf with another color tag on it.  Not cool.

Anyhow, rant over, time for the show and tell:)

First up is this awesome retro condiment server.  I think this is genius and can see it's usefulness in a family like mine.  I gave $4 for it and don't plan to keep it, but it's been growing on me and I just might change my mind.

Another item I'm in love with!  A hot/cold server from the 50's with bakelite handles!  I wish I could figure out how to get a picture of this without me in the reflection, I must have taken 30 pictures and all of them either had a bad flash reflection or me.  Trust me, having your reflection in a round, shiny surface is not flattering.  Another $4 item, it seemed to be the going price for everything this time.

Retro, divided candy dish by California Potteries.  Not the most modern color, but it's a really nice dish and  in near perfect condition.  $4, again:)

My next $4 item is this vintage ironstone coffee pot.  Made by Broadhurst England.  I love the shape and color of this, but I'm not a big coffee drinker.  I honestly thought it was a teapot until I got home and did a little research.  Unfortunately I couldn't find much, since it seems to be a rather rare pattern.

My find of the day!  An almost full set of crystal stemware and a large crystal bowl.  All just gorgeous and a great addition to my glassware.  I found 8 of the larger goblets and just 4 of the small.  I'm hoping to run across another 4 of the small so that I can set a full table with them someday.  You never know what you'll find!  The large pedestal bowl has a beautiful ring to it, I can't stop flicking it whenever I walk by, it cost me just $3.99.  The larger stemware was $4.99 each and the smaller ones were $2.99 each and were half off, making them $1.50 each.  Again, one of those items that's near impossible for me to get a decent picture of!

Mid-week Finds

My little guy, Pudge, was feeling out of sorts the other day so I decided to get him out of the house for a bit.  Of course I ended up at a thrift store.  Where else would I go on a Wednesday?

 A trio of candle holders.

I found the two white birds for $.99 each and the glass turkey for just $.59.  The turkey says Avon on the bottom and he's quite heavy.  The white birds look like a cross between a turkey and a dove, but they should still look nice holding their candles on our table.

 Note Cards & Coasters

I'm always looking for fun note cards to send to my friends and family and these are just perfect at $.49.  The coasters are from the 50's and may end up in my shop.  There are some damaged ones, so I'm still deciding.  I paid $1.99 for them, which is more than I would have liked, but who doesn't love Dennis the Menace?

 Vera Scarves

The large scarf is probably from the 80's and I don't know the material, but it's quite pretty.  The Christmas scarf or runner, is very nice with bright colors and is 100% silk, not sure of age.  Both were less than $1.

Hawaiian Shirt & Shorts

This gorgeous little boys outfit still had the tags attached and will be perfect for Pudge this summer.  Original price was $21, I paid $4.99.  We found another Hawaiian shirt a couple months ago at a different thrift store and he just loves it.  I like that they are made in Hawaii from 100% cotton.  I'm not a fan of synthetic fibers.  I guess I'm a bit of a clothing snob.

Not bad for a quick, unscheduled trip in the middle of the week:)

Weekend Finds

I had a great time bargain hunting this weekend and I think I almost set a personal record for great finds.  The object on Friday was to find a prom dress for my oldest daughter.  Last year was a painful, slow experience, so I was thrilled when she found just the right one at the first shop we went into.  Since her dress only cost half of what last years did, it made it an even better deal:)  After that success I was onto the thrift stores!

I actually found a ton of items, some for keeps, some for resale, below are just a few highlights:)

I found several different table linens including this cute patchwork quilt and some embroidered napkins.

A vintage tablecloth and embroidered runner, found at the same garage sale for $1 each.  The tablecloth has a large stain that I'm hoping will come out, if not I'll use it as a cutter.  It has such pretty colors in it.

These Corinthian blue glasses are by Jeanette Glass and were $0.79 each.  Another great addition to our table:)

My husband's favorite pick, a pair of Wyooter Hooter glasses.  They were just $0.50 each and I bought them with resale in mind, but my husband says he's keeping them.

They even have the recipe on the back.

I was excited about this find since I have such a mishmash of dishware.  I can finally set a table with a matching set:)

It's a 44pc. set of Noritake China and was just$45.  It's probably my most expensive purchase for March, but I love the colors and the completeness of the set.  I only have a few pieces to add and I'll have a full service for 8.  I was thrilled it had 7 dinner plates and so many serving pieces, all mint!

The pattern is called Palos Verde and is from the 60's or 70's.  I think these are perfect for Easter and springtime and can't believe they sat in the shop as long as they did.  The sticker was dated from June of last year!  I think they might have been passed up due to the matte finish, but that's just one more thing I love about them.

Now for my super, surprising find of the weekend.........

A beautiful soup tureen by Simpsons Potters in the Clinton Inn pattern.  I've been searching for a soup tureen for months and have found a few with missing pieces or with cracks and other flaws, nothing I wanted to spend money on.  This one was just sitting out in an open case calling to me.  It is in perfect condition and comes close to matching some of my blue china patterns.  I hemmed around trying to decide if I really wanted to spend $15 on one piece, but I'm glad I caved.  I came home and looked it up on Replacements and about fell off my chair.  No one is allowed to touch it. Replacements wants $249.95 for this.  Hubby says I should never have looked it up, cause now I'm afraid to use it.
